Laboratories for GIS
University of Idaho
GIS teaching and research laboratories at the University of Idaho are clustered in four university colleges:
Agriculture
- Global positioning equipment (DGPS navigation quality). PC desktops and
portables (CD-writer, plotters, digitizer, large format scanner, and inkjet
printer. Software includes programs from ESRI, Trimble, Garmin, Idrisi, and
Evolution Computing as well as other general software). LiCor 1800, quantum
sensors, and photorespiration measuring devices.

GIS Lab, Biological and Agricultural Engineering: Gateway PC 166MHZ running
GRASS in Linux/UNIX environment. 64 MB RAM, 4.0 GB disk space, 17"
Trinitron Monitor. Pentium PC 233MHZ running Windows NT 4.0 with ArcInfo,
ArcView 3.0, 128 MB RAM, 9 GB disk space (SCSI hard drives), CDROM read/write,
IOmega Zip drive, 17" monitor, HP-722C color printer.
Art and Architecture
- PC/UNIX lab with 15 networked Pentium computers, 17" high res. monitors,
one HP 700 series workstation, penplotters, laser printers. Software
includes: ArcInfo 7.1.2 UNIX and NT version, GIX, AutoCAD and
LandCAD.
Forestry, Wildlife, and Range Sciences
- Landscape Dynamics Lab: Unix network for 5 SUN Sparcstations and 3
NT 4.0 Pentium PCs. Software includes: Arc/Info 7.1,
ArcView 3, Erdas Imagine 8.3, ENVI.
- RS/GIS Teaching and Research Lab: 2 HP Unix workstations with 30 GB of disk Space,
5 Xterms, NetApp F520 file server to serve up both the NT and Unix
environments with 140GB of disk space, 12 NT Pentium computers, 19" high res
monitors, High resolution
digital data projector, Calcomp Techjet Color GT plotter (36"), laser printer,
8 Trimble GeoExplorer II GPS receivers, 2 Trimble ProXR GPS receivers, Software
includes: Arc/Info 7.1, ArcView 3, Erdas Imagine 8.3, ENVI, Pathfinder, Office.
- Remote Sensing Research Lab: 4 pentium II computers, 21" inch high res monitors,
color laser printer, 3 Bausch & Lomb Zoom Transfer Scopes, Airphoto
interpretation and measurement equipment, Impulse 200 ranging laser, airphoto and
map collection. Software includes: Arc/Info 7.1, ArcView 3, Erdas Imagine 8.3,
ENVI, Pathfinder, Office, Splus.
Mines and Earth Resources
- PC lab with 24 networked Pentium computers, 17" high res. monitors, software
includes: PC ArcInfo 3.5, ArcView 3.0 with extensions, Atlas*GIS, programming
language compilers.
- UNIX workstation lab with 7 HP 700 series workstations and 16 X terminals,
two HP high-end color penplotters (D size), one Calcomp color printer (C size),
two laser printers, four Pentium computers for digital image processing.
Software includes: ArcInfo 7.1.2, Erdas-Imagine 8.3.

Campus-Wide
- Besides these specialized college labs, two GIS packages: PC
ArcInfo 3.5 and ArcView 3.0 are widely available on 670 computers in
general-use computer labs on the University of Idaho campus. The
University of Idaho has a license agreement with ESRI for the
university-wide use of ESRI's software products.
