Teaching and GIS Curricula
At The University of Idaho

Geographic Information Science (GIS) curricula at the University of Idaho are comprised of courses in seven specialties:

  • Computer Mapping and Cartography
  • Engineering
  • Forestry
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Geo-statistics
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Remote Sensing

These courses are taught in five academic departments clustered in four university colleges:

  • Art and Architecture
  • Engineering
  • Forestry, Wildlife, and Range Sciences
  • Mines and Earth Resources

The University of Idaho offers a B.S.Cart. degree program with specialty options in Cartography or GIS through the Department of Geography.

Students at the University of Idaho can select from fourteen undergraduate and four graduate courses. One course -- GIS Primer -- has been offered for the last four years during the summer session, in addition to both semesters of the academic year. The enrollment in this course has increased 100 percent during the last two years. This is indicative of the growing interest in GIS at UI, which in turn has fostered a broader selection of other GIS courses offered, with ensuing growth in overall course enrollments and degrees earned.
